Dishwasher Maintenance: Why Yours Isn't Cleaning & How to Fix It
Dishwashers are one of the most over-blamed appliances in the kitchen. Most 'broken' dishwashers are actually clean ones that just haven't been maintained — and most real failures fall into a handful of predictable categories. Here's how to tell the difference.
Maintenance recommendations
Monthly: clean the filter
At the bottom of the tub, under the lower spray arm, is a removable filter. Twist it out, rinse it under hot water, and brush off any food debris. This is the #1 reason dishes come out gritty. Most homeowners don't know it exists.
Monthly: run a cleaning cycle
Place a cup of white vinegar on the top rack and run a hot cycle empty. Then sprinkle a cup of baking soda across the bottom and run a short cycle. This removes mineral buildup that's especially bad with Utah's hard water.
Every few months: clean the spray arms
Pop off the upper and lower spray arms and check the holes for clogs. A toothpick clears them. Clogged spray arms mean water doesn't reach the dishes.
Use rinse aid
Rinse aid isn't optional in hard-water areas — it's what prevents the cloudy film on glasses and helps dishes dry. Keep the dispenser full.
Scrape, don't pre-rinse
Modern detergents need food residue to bind to. Pre-rinsing actually makes them work worse. Scrape the plate; leave the rest.
Most common failures
Not draining properly
Clogged filter (check first!), clogged drain hose, failed drain pump, or — surprisingly often — a clogged garbage disposal that the dishwasher drains into. Run the disposal first.
Leaking from the door
Worn door gasket, loose or clogged spray arm spraying water onto the door seal, or a cracked detergent dispenser.
Dishes not getting clean
Clogged filter, clogged spray arms, low water temperature (water heater needs to be ≥120°F), or a failed water inlet valve not letting enough water in.
Won't start a cycle
Failed door latch switch, control panel issue, or main control board. On Bosch and Miele, also check that the child lock isn't on.
Loud grinding noise
Foreign object in the chopper or drain pump — a fruit pit, glass shard, or a piece of bone. Often requires pump removal.
Standing water at the bottom
A small amount (under an inch) is normal — it keeps the seals from drying out. More than that means a drain or pump issue.
When to call a technician
