Why Does My Dryer Take 2 or 3 Cycles to Dry Clothes?

A dryer that runs but doesn't actually dry is one of the most-overlooked safety issues in a home. About 8 out of 10 'takes two cycles' calls we go on turn out to be a vent problem — and a blocked vent is the leading cause of dryer fires nationwide. Here's how to find the issue yourself before it gets worse.

Maintenance recommendations

Test 1: the 15-minute vent test

Disconnect the flexible duct from the back of the dryer and run a 15-minute timed dry cycle on high heat with nothing inside. If clothes dry in one cycle after this, your vent is the problem. Reconnect everything and have the full vent line professionally cleaned — including the exterior vent cap.

Test 2: check the exterior vent flap

Walk outside while the dryer is running. The exterior vent flap should be wide open with strong warm air coming out. If the flap barely moves or air feels weak, lint is choking the vent line. Birds nesting in the vent are also surprisingly common in Utah neighborhoods in spring.

Test 3: clean the lint screen housing

Pull the lint screen and shine a flashlight into the slot. Lint coats the inside of the housing over years and restricts airflow even when the screen looks clean. Use a long thin brush or a vacuum hose to clear it.

Test 4: check moisture sensor bars

Inside the drum, two metal strips sense when clothes are dry. Fabric softener film coats them and fools the dryer into stopping early. Wipe them with rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball.

Most common failures

Partially failed heating element

Electric dryers use a coil that can fail halfway — still warm, but not hot enough to evaporate water. Easy diagnose with a meter; common $200–$300 repair.

Weak igniter or gas valve coils (gas dryers)

On gas dryers, a weak igniter doesn't always light the burner. You'll feel air movement but barely-warm exhaust. Igniter is one of the most common gas-dryer parts we replace.

Bad thermistor or cycling thermostat

These sensors regulate temperature. When they drift out of spec, the dryer runs cooler than it should. The dryer 'works' — just not well enough to actually finish a load.

Old blower wheel

A cracked or loose blower wheel doesn't move enough air through the drum. Common on older Maytag and Whirlpool dryers, especially after a vent has been clogged for a long time.

When to call a technician

If you cleared the vent and clothes still take more than one cycle, the dryer needs service. Long dry times double your power bill and are a fire risk — don't put it off. Call us with the model number and we'll usually solve it in one visit.
