Whirlpool Top-Load Washer Not Spinning & Continuously Draining Repair

When a Whirlpool top-load washer won't spin the water out or keeps draining nonstop, the cycle is essentially broken. Clothes come out dripping wet, or the machine sits empty and never fills because it's stuck in a drain loop. These are two of the most common failure modes we see on Whirlpool direct-drive and VMW (Vertical Modular Washer) top loaders across Salt Lake City — and both are very repairable.

Symptoms

What you're probably seeing

  • Washer fills and agitates but will not switch into the spin cycle
  • Drum is completely full of water at the end of the cycle
  • Drain pump runs constantly even when the lid is opened
  • Machine drains as fast as it fills — never reaches the wash level
  • Loud humming from underneath during the drain or spin portion
  • Clothes are left soaked and heavy, requiring manual wringing

Common Causes

Why your Whirlpool Top-Load Washing Machine is throwing Not Spinning / Continuously Draining

Faulty lid switch / lid lock assembly

Whirlpool washers will not spin if the lid switch fails — it's a safety lockout. The switch can break from repeated lid slams or simply wear out over time.

Broken or slipped drive belt

On belt-drive Whirlpool models, a stretched, cracked, or thrown belt stops the tub from spinning even though the motor runs.

Failed drive coupling (direct-drive models)

The rubber coupling between the motor and transmission can shear after heavy loads. Motor runs, transmission doesn't — no spin and often a loud grinding noise.

Clogged or burned-out drain pump

A sock or small item lodges in the pump impeller and locks the motor, causing the machine to get stuck mid-drain. The control keeps trying and the pump hums nonstop.

Bad drain pump relay on control board

On VMW and newer electronic models, the board can keep energizing the drain pump even when it shouldn't — causing the continuous drain symptom.

Worn clutch or transmission

The clutch engages the spin. If it's worn, the motor spins but the tub barely moves. Transmission gear failures can also stop spin entirely.

Our Process

How we fix it

  1. 1

Diagnose the exact failure mode: spin-no-spin, drain loop, or both

  2. 2

Test the lid switch/lock for continuity and proper lid-closed signal

  3. 3

Inspect the drive belt, drive coupling, and clutch for wear or breakage

  4. 4

Check the drain pump for blockages and test motor resistance

  5. 5

Replace the failed component and run a full fill-agitate-drain-spin cycle to verify

FAQ

Whirlpool Not Spinning / Continuously Draining questions

Why does my Whirlpool washer keep draining and never fill?+

This is almost always a stuck drain pump relay or a drain hose siphoning issue. We test the pump and board signal to pinpoint whether it's a mechanical blockage or an electrical control fault.

Is it the motor or the transmission if the washer won't spin?+

Usually neither. The drive coupling or lid switch is the culprit in about 70% of Whirlpool no-spin calls. We test both in minutes before recommending any major component replacement.

How quickly can you get this fixed?+

Most Whirlpool no-spin and drain issues are resolved in a single visit, typically under an hour. We stock lid switches, drive couplings, belts, and drain pumps for the most common Whirlpool models.
